According to the International Coaching Federation (ICF), coaching is a collaborative partnership that engages clients in a thought-provoking and creative process designed to help them maximize their personal and professional potential.Coaching is confidential and future-oriented. Rather than concentrating on problems to be solved, it focuses on strengths to be developed and goals to be achieved. Through structured dialogue, reflection, and accountability, clients gain clarity, expand perspective, and move forward with intention and empowerment. It is equally important to clarify what coaching is not.Coaching is not therapy, consulting, mentoring, or training. It does not involve diagnosing mental health conditions, treating past trauma, or providing expert advice.Instead of directing, fixing, or prescribing solutions, professional coaching is grounded in partnership. The coach facilitates insight and awareness, enabling clients to access their own resources, define their own goals, and create sustainable forward movement.

My professional path into coaching grew from personal experience and a deep interest in the mind–body connection.Following back surgery, I was introduced to Pilates during rehabilitation. That experience sparked a desire to understand how the body functions, adapts, and heals. I became a certified personal trainer to build a solid foundation in movement science and physiology.Over time, my focus expanded beyond physical training to the psychology of behavior change. I became increasingly interested in how habits are formed, how mindset influences health outcomes, and how individuals reshape their own narratives. This led me to earn certification in Narrative Therapy.A subsequent accident further strengthened my conviction that sustainable healing requires both physical rehabilitation and psychological resilience. We need a strong mind to rebuild the body, and a strong body to support the mind. This realization guided me toward trauma-informed coaching certification, where I deepened my understanding of how the brain functions, how lived experiences shape mindset, and how safety supports meaningful change. I am currently completing my Health & Well-Being Coach Training at Duke University’s School of Integrative Medicine, integrating evidence-based mind-body approaches, behavioral science, and structured coaching methodology.

"Barbara has an innate ability to make me feel seen and heard. She provides a safe and grounding presence while simultaneously asking thoughtful and insightful questions. This has allowed me to take transformational strides in my own journey of self-discovery and overcoming obstacles I have faced during our ongoing work together. Barbara's capacity to allow me to expand my own sense of self, on my own terms, with her as a guide, extends well beyond our sessions together. Her gentle, consistent and encouraging presence feels like a stable force by my side well after our time in a coaching session. She is the light that keeps on giving and I highly recommend anyone looking for an attuned coach, to book a session with Barbara.— Laura S.
